2019 V-Strom 650 XT vs Smoky mountain 500

I've got a 2019 V-Strom 650 XT and im wondering if it's too big for the Smoky Mountain 500, especially for someone like me who's mostly just ridden pavement. I'm going with my 3 older uncles on Gen 1 KLRs, and honestly, Im a bit nervous, most videos show lighter dual sports doing the route. If its doable without dropping the bike every half hour, i'll definitely need to upgrade the stock tires. Any solid tire suggestions for mixed terrain like gravel, rocks and pavement? Thanks!

I know some taking bigger bikes through the SM500. it's doable with the V-Strom if you pace yourself. For tires, check out the Dunlop Trailmax Missions. it can handle mixed terrain well and won't throw you off on pavement.

The V-Strom 650 XT isn't too big for the SM500 but for a mostly pavement rider, it's like bringing a sport-touring couch to a trail run. You'll survive, but only if you're okay wrestling it like a bear

Haha, "sport-touring couch" is too real @Folayo. But yeah, it's doable but be ready to muscle it through the tighter stuff. If I would suggest @Persephone_12 Trailmax Missions are the way to go. Also look at Shinko 804/805s if he wants something more aggressive but still road-friendly.

I'm mostly on pavement but still want something versatile enough for light trails . Do you think the VStrom 650 XT's weight and handling make it manageable for occasional offroad or would you recommend something lighter if i want to do more trail riding?
